MYTHOS OF SUSSEX

A series of postcards that celebrate myths and legends of Sussex, England.

White dog of Alfriston

Every seventh Midsummer, the dog haunted the White Way after his owner, 15 year old William Chowne was killed and hastily buried there. During Midsummer, as the sun enters Cancer, spirits are able to pass back to the present, but reunited with William after the discovery of his grave two centuries later, the dog no longer needs to cross here.

Dragon of Cissbury Ring

The Cissbury Dragon protected gold in the Neolithic mines and barrows of one of the most significant sites of the South Downs.

DRAGON OF ST LEONARD’S FOREST

St Leonard was a Christian hermit who killed the dragon terrorising the locals, and where his own blood fell, Lilly of the Valley grew. As reward, the nightingales were silenced and adders were banished from the woodland.

Visually influenced by Saxon art and sixth century Illuminated manuscripts such as the Book of Durrow.
