MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH

“He turned suddenly and confronted his pursuer. There was a sharp cry — and the dagger dropped gleaming upon the sable carpet, upon which, instantly afterwards, fell prostrate in death the Prince Prospero.”

Graphite and Photoshop illustration of the Red Death, in which the figure of death appears amongst the wealthy guests of a masquerade ball, whilst the country outside succumbs to plague.

The ‘clothing’ for the figure was based upon winding sheets, which were common burial ‘garments’ that were used for communal graves, especially for plague victims. These sheets are also historically associated with ghosts.
